Dough is the lowest effort activity in the shop for the adult and one of the longest for the child. It comes out of a pot, it goes back into a pot, and there is nothing to assemble in between.

How to choose

Dough is a table toy rather than a floor toy, and a mat or a tray is what keeps it that way. The tool set matters more than the number of colours: a cutter, a roller and a press turn a lump into an activity, while eight colours with no tools become one grey lump inside a week.

Air dry clay is a different purchase, for a child who wants to make something that survives the afternoon. Keep the pots closed and expect a set to last a season rather than a year.
