Sensory and sand play
Kinetic sand, magic sand, bubble wands, fidget sets, nesting bowls and sensory tables. Play that is about the material itself rather than about reaching a goal, which is what makes it the section parents come back to when a child needs to settle.
It is also the easiest thing to set up when a child is fractious and you have twenty minutes to fill. There are no rules, there is no way to do it wrong, and it stops when you decide it stops.

How to choose
Sand play needs a tray or a table, and it is worth buying the container at the same time as the sand rather than discovering the problem afterwards. Kinetic and magic sand do not dry out the way modelling dough does, so an opened box stays usable.
Bubble wands are the cheapest reliable outdoor win in the shop. Fidget sets and nesting bowls are quiet, contained and travel well. None of this is a therapy product and none of it is sold as one. It is simply play that a lot of children find calming.
